Code of Conduct
This is the official Code of Conduct for my community comprised of students enrolled at courses CS 126 and 136 for the fall’21 semester at NAU.
Expected behaviour (to reinforce)
- Empathy is valued. Be understanding of each other, and try to think ahead if an action that you’re doing could potential make someone else feel uncomfortable (avoid that scenario).
- Please be respectful of differing opinions, viewpoints, and experiences - everyone has a say in the classroom, and everyone has a unique perspective which should be noted.
- Please be kind and courteous to each other. There’s no need to be mean or rude, but if you have been unintentionally, go for an apology as the other person might have been hurt and it could have a negative impact on them.
- Classroom ethics
- If you’re unplugging cables (such as for the HDMI port, in the case when you want to use your personal audio/video devices), ensure to plug them back in when you’re done.
- Always turn off the computers (especially the monitors) after your work is done and before you leave.
- If you find that someone has left something (could be anything, from handheld items such as notebooks and jackscards to electronic devices such as mobiles and laptop charger cables) behind, report it to me, unless you know exactly whose it is, and you know that you are able to return it.
- If a case arises wherein your paired-programming partner is absent and you want to pair up with someone else whose partner is also absent, feel free to do so without asking me, but ask that person whether he/she would like to pair-up.
- Avoid actions which are not suitable for the classroom/labroom - these include disrupting others with unnecessary chit-chat (especially after you’re done with your work) and throwing trash (such as wrappers, chewing gum, food items) around.
Unacceptable behaviour (to reduce ambiguity)
- Any form of discrimination will not be tolerated.
- Any form of harassment or abuse to others will not be tolerated.
Harassment includes but is not limited to offensive verbal or written comments related to gender, age, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, body size, race, religion, social class, economic status, veteran status. Additional cases of harassment include but not limited to sharing sexual images, deliberate intimidation, stalking, following, brigading, doxxing, harassing photography or recording and inappropriate physical contact. If what you’re doing is making someone feel uncomfortable, that counts as harassment and is enough reason to stop doing it.
Reporting misbehaviour
If you feel uncomfortable or think there may be a potential violation of the code of conduct (points mentioned above, or anything else that may deem as inappropriate behaviour to you), please report it to me immediately via your bblearn email to mine (my name pops up as a TA on course email - ‘Anirban Chetia’), or if you would rather prefer, my NAU email: ac4743@nau.edu
Feel free to contact the course instructors or anyone else you deem as appropriate authority, in case you feel uncomfortable sharing it with me.
Violating the CoC
Violations of the Code of Conduct in forms under unacceptable behaviour (instances of discrimination and harassment) that are reported will be taken seriously and reviewed promptly. Violators would be suspended from any community activities, in addition to being subjected to strict disciplinary action and if necessary, expulsion from the course as well. For violations which may appear to be minor and could go with a warning (for instance, the use of abusive words) too, will be taken seriously if the ways of the violator are not amended, and if repeated misbehaviour continues.
The privacy of the reporter will be maintained. Please report all such incidents that you may come across or encounter, even if it doesn’t involve you. (don’t be ignorant of others!)
